A robot on a linear axis can tend multiple machines, longer workpieces or several positions along a production line.
Positioner as an external axis
In welding, it is often more important to bring the joint into a stable position than to push the robot to the edge of its working envelope.
Synchronization
The key point is to verify whether the robot controller supports synchronized control of additional axes, how many axes, and through which interface.
Plan ahead
Even if the first cell has no external axes, the possibility of adding them later can be important when selecting the platform.
